Nestled in Coconino County, Flagstaff went from a lumber community to tourism when Route 66 was commissioned by local businessmen to pass through their small mountain community. Native Sinagua people once lived and thrived using the fertile land from volcanic ash eruptions in the 11th century. The most visited is Sunset Crater. Nearby are the ruins of Wupatki, both of which are protect in Wupatki National Monument. It was first settled as the present-day city in 1876.
