Gratitude Journals

Hello. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew there was more to life than just working. I wanted to learn how life worked. I wanted to be the best me I could. I won't torture you with the details of my journey toward personal growth. But I've been asked to share the tips and strategies I use to cope with stress at work, stress with children, stress with money - just plain stress - in order to appreciate the world around me and the contribution I make as a human being to the community in which I live.

My first discovery - the Gratitude Journal. This one is so easy you can do it in your sleep. Here it is. Ready.

At one time during the day, write 5 things you are grateful for in your gratitude journal.

Here's a sample.

I am grateful for a delicious meal made by my talented partner. I am grateful I didn't yell at my son today. I am grateful I had enough money for gas. I am grateful I was on time to work. I am grateful for A/C in my car during this heat wave.

That's it. Like I said, easy.

'The experts' suggest you do it before you go to bed. They feel you can reflect on the day and more easily remember what you'd like to write about. I always snuggle in, get comfy, and then realize I didn't do my gratitude journal. Which was causing me stress. So I do it when it works for me, first thing in the morning. I feel it starts my day with gathering evidence that life is good, and primes me to continue looking for the good throughout the day.

Do it when it works for you. Try to make it the same time every day so that it becomes a habit. Maybe at your coffee break. Or at lunch. While you're in line at the drive thru. Keep a small notebook in your car for just such an occasion. It doesn't matter when. Just that you're grateful.

Remember, the Universe wants us to have all we want. However, it can only give us more of what we already have, what we're focused on. If all we focus on is tiredness and stress, it'll give us more of that. But if we focus on gratitude, it gives us more to be grateful for. That's called prosperity.

Don't sabotage yourself by having to find the right journal, or trying to decide when you should do it, or guilt yourself by continually forgetting. Buy a one-subject notebook for $1 at the office store and set an alarm on your phone. Build a habit for good. For you.
